A welcoming speech was given by the chairman of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Tan Sri Leo Moggie introducing the Tun Mahathir Lecture series from the year 2005 until present. Dr. Tun Mahathir gave a speech earlier in the year 2005 to initialize the Tun Mahathir lecture series for UNITEN students.
Dr. Tun Mahathir then gave his lecture and he started off by talking about the world history and how globalization has affected the world. He referred to the case that happened in Singapore about the small island that was supposed to belong to Malaysia and how Malaysia handled the case wisely by accepting the world court’s order.
Communication is very easy nowadays as what was stated by the fourth prime minister. “The world is getting smaller” and by this he discussed how easy it is to go around the world. In the olden days, it would’ve occupied a few years but with modern transport, two days is all it takes. He wants Malaysia to be a developed country by 2020. It’s up to the youth to take the Malaysian market to the next level by protecting the local market, more tax should be imposed on the foreign cars and putting aside the rules for bringing in goods to sell in Malaysia.
The topic about gays being able to get married in other countries was also touched by Dr. Tun Mahathir. He said Malaysians, especially Malays should follow the Islamic code. This goes the same in handling goods such that if we’re to trade goods with other countries, precaution steps should be taken. Just because that good is sold successfully in another country does not mean it’s also acceptable in Malaysia.
Overall, the lecture was done professionally and it was very entertaining.
